If you’re experiencing inflammation and leaky gut, chances are you haven’t been absorbing the nutrients you need from your food alone. Many people with Hashimoto’s have dangerously low levels of vitamin D and B12, which can lead to fatigue, depression, memory impairment and lethargy... any of those symptoms sound familiar? We're also more likely to be experiencing what is known as Leaky Gut, or increased intestinal permeability. Learn more on what that means here.
In a perfect world we‘d get all of our nutritional needs met through food, drink and sun alone, but in a perfect world we also wouldn’t have Autoimmune Disease. Until then, I've put together a list of my top 7 supplement recommendations for managing Hashimoto's Thyroiditis
The following list is a collection of the supplements I take to help my immune system chill out, restore nutrients and heal leaky gut. All have been picked specifically because they contain no fillers/dyes and are completely ALLERGEN FREE. I have had a lot of success with them.
Before making diet, lifestyle or supplement changes, it is important to talk with your doctor about it.
Supplements for Leaky Gut:
Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics for Women
Garden of Life Dr. Formulated Probiotics for Men
I recommend these because not only are they guaranteed 50 billion microbes per serving and 15+ strains, but they're hypoallergenic and shelf stable. No refrigeration required! Studies have shown that microbial modification can help to reduce inflammation in the bodies of people suffering from Autoimmune Disease. They can also help to clear up symptoms of bloat, stomach pain, IBS, gas and acid reflux that so many of us with autoimmune conditions deal with regularly. Probiotics have also been proven to increase positive vibes and decrease stress. There's really no downside to taking them.
Saccharomyces Boulardii
This strain of probiotic has been shown to have a regulatory effect on intestinal flora, helping to maintain a normal balance of friendly bacteria in the intestines. This means killing off bad bacteria and parasites (if there are any), stabilizing the good, and modulating immunity. It's also been shown to help if you have issues going too much or too little to the bathroom.
L-Glutamine
The most abundant amino acid in the body, L-Glutamine helps to support and restore the mucosal lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
Probiotics and L-Glutamine are a powerful combo, working to restore healthy GI function and reduce intestinal permeability. They will also help you to feel a lot better, less bloated and gassy.
Everything Else:
The Myers Way Multivitamin for Women and Men for Thyroid Support
Everyone needs a good multivitamin, especially if you're suffering form an autoimmune condition. Chances are, due to underlying food sensitivities that may be the root cause of your Hashimoto's you haven't been absorbing the nutrients you need from your food alone. This multivitamin is specifically formulated to support thyroid health, with selenium, zinc and iodine added in. It's also hypoallergenic for optimal absorption and easier on my stomach than most multivitamins I've found.
Douglas Laboratories Vitamin D
Vitamin D deficiency is found frequently in people with Hashimoto's. Supplementation has been shown to improve TSH syrum levels and decrease the cardiovascular risks associated with hypothyroidism. It has a whole host of benefits outside of hypothyroidism as well like improving mood, fighting against depression and protecting against respiratory infections and strokes.
Pure Encapsulations Liposomal Glutathione
A powerful defense agains oxidation and inflammation, glutathione is one of the best supplements in you armament against Hashimoto's. This amino acid fights oxidative stress that may make Hashimoto’s symptoms worse. It’s so important that a deficiency of glutathione can actually lead to developing thyroid issues.
Pure Encapsulations O.N.E. Omega Fish Oil Supplement
My last recommendation in the fight against inflammation and immune regulation is a great fish oil supplement. Omega 3's have been shown to improve brain and gut health, immune response, depression, adrenal function and liver health.
Whichever supplements you choose, it is important to pick ones that are gluten, dairy, soy, nightshade, corn, and egg free. As I’ve said before, if you have a sensitivity to one of the ingredients, even if it is unknown, it could reduce your ability to absorb what you’re supplementing and may keep exposing you to something you’ve been working so hard to cut out.
Remember, before making diet, lifestyle or supplement changes, it is important to talk with your doctor about it.
